2012 was a big year.

I am sitting on a plane heading back to Melbourne and my head is spinning.  When I get off this flight, I pack up all my belongings  and also sell off and give away as much as I can. I am moving out of my apartment in Melbourne that I have called home for the last little while.  I am going to be living out of a suitcase for the next few months until I find a place in New York City to call home.

I am moving to New York.

These words do not even seem real.

In May last year, this thought had not even crossed my mind.   I actually had not even made my mind up properly until a few weeks ago.

Some may call me foolish. Some may think I am crazy.  All I know is in the importance of chasing after all that you desire with everything you have.

But before I attempt any packing.  I need to finally sit down and go through all the images I took in 2012. To look back and reflect upon what an amazing year it was.

It was a beautiful year. It had a lot of ups and downs. Laughter and tears. Heartbreaks and aches. Right decisions and wrong decisions.  But most importantly it was a year that taught me that anything is possible.

It was a crazy year.

2013 is already going to be more so. It already is.  I am going to write another blog post about that this week.

But until then, here is a look back at my wedding and portrait work from 2012. Being a photographer is a peculiar thing. I step into people’s lives for a day, wander around with them and report back my findings through a series of images. I have become an anthropologist.  In the process I spend some pretty intimate moments with them. I will never take that for granted. So here is all the very amazing people I had the honor of photographing in 2012.  Thank you to all my clients that has made all this possible. Thank you for letting me witness this all. x

michelle & andy

Michelle & Andy were married last October (ah yes, im a little behind on my blogging). They got ready in the same house but in separate rooms and on separate levels. I liked how they got ready in the same house as I got to switch between the two, documenting the different happenings and energies in the rooms. We then set off to do most of the portrait photos of Michelle and Andy with their bridal party before the ceremony. Poor Michelle was attacked by mosquitoes during the shoot. I almost had a nervous breakdown on her behalf, I drove like a crazy woman to the chemist to buy every tablet and cream available that would settle the bites. Thank god the bites went down and you would have not known by the time it was the ceremony :)  (I now carry a bottle of Stingoes in my camera bag ;). They had a lovely ceremony overlooking the Indian ocean just before sunset. We then hugged and said our goodbyes and they ran off into the sunset to their wedding reception. It was a lovely day. xo

AMBER + GARY {BELOVED}

Amber and Gary were such a pleasure to spend time with and photograph. I enjoyed our beloved shoot immensely. It was also Gary’s birthday the day we did this shoot which made it all the more special. I think its such a nice way to spend ones birthday :) I am photographing Amber and Gary’s wedding next month in Margaret River. I cannot wait, its going to be an amazing day :)

This was my first complete film shoot (well except for the very last frame). I am making the transition of shooting more film in my portrait and wedding work. I have always been a film shooter, shooting the first 4 years of my wedding photography career all on film but in 2007 somehow caved into going digital. It was mostly due to the frustrations of not having a good photo lab to work with to scan my films. Ive finally found an awesome lab, Richards Photo Lab, who have been amazing to work with. I always kept shooting film for my personal fine art and travel work. I think and shoot differently when shooting film. It slows me down and my creativity seems to flow more. It makes me look harder for that isolated beautiful moment. After attending Jonathan Canlas’s FIND workshop in Melbourne in January (more on this later), I made the decision I need make the transition back into film with my portrait and wedding work. When I am editing my digital work, I spend hours trying to make it look like my film work, so I decided I should just shoot film and be done with losing my life in front of a computer. I am loving the process of making the transition back to my sweet sweet love of film. ❤

Nikky + Danilo

Nikky and Danilo, how I love these two. Nobody in the church knew it was pouring with rain outside during the ceremony. Nikky and Danilo were the first to exit the church, I opened the doors for them and they were greeted with the rain storm. Instead of freaking out, they just laughed and laughed and laughed. It was my favorite part of their wedding day. I think it shows the type of people they are. ♥♥♥. We were lucky to dodge the rain most of the afternoon, running undercover and into the Moores Building when it got a bit crazy outside. Just as we were finishing up shooting in Fremantle, we had to run like mad to the cars, I got absolutely drenched, head to toe. I loved it.
